Care Giving and Self Care

Many times, care giving of another, means less time for taking care of yourself. Some things can be done, like setting up your pills and theirs while you stand at the counter. You can prepare meals for several people at one time. You can take a deep breath before answering a difficult question or having to give a negative reply.

Caregiving involves measuring your energy, so you can also be able to take care of yourself . You still need proper nourishment and exercise. You also need time to refresh your self. Create a sense of balance between care of patient and care of self.

Don’t forget about taking care of your creative side as well. God has blessed me with many talents. But when I am overwhelmed and exhausted, my creativity suffers, and I can become depressed. I must fight to stay in a positive mindset for myself and the patient.

Recently, I discovered acrylic pouring or fluid acrylic art. I tend to try to control certain things in my life. This new hobby reminds me that for some things, you just have to trust the process. Sometimes, you get a beautiful piece of art. Other times, you may learn which colors should not be put next to each other or which style you really need to practice a lot more. It can be quite humbling.
